Little Travellers HIV/AIDS Initiative

Little Travellers in Schools

The Little Travellers have journeyed all the way from South Africa, bearing lessons of global cooperation to find hope amidst hardship.  They also provide a direct connection with a community across the world, and enable students of all ages to learn about other cultures and various issues facing children and families in Africa.  And, Little Travellers also provide a unique opportunity for students to engage in fundraising to help the community that they will learn about.  These are teaching opportunities that can benefit students of all ages - and maybe even teachers, too!

We are currently developing an Education Package for teachers in Manitoba to use as teaching aids to introduce these valuable lessons into their classrooms.

If you're an educator at any level, please contact Nisa, our Education Coordinator to find out how you can incorporate the Little Travellers education package into your curriculum, raising awareness in your students, and raising money in your community for a great cause!   Click here to read about previous classes that have successfully participated in the Little Travellers Initiative.

Dear [Little Travellers Initiative],

Thank you so much for all you do for the people of Africa! Your efforts have been an inspiration in our school!

After sharing about my own traveller doll pin that I received from my mother, my grade three class connected Simunye with our unit in Social Studies. Branching out from our citizenship program in our school, my students asked if they could sell the pins as a class fundraiser. My students expressed the desire to make a difference in lives of people far away and I was so proud of their idea. They set a goal of raising $500 and were excited when they received the pins from you the following week. I never imagined my students would take such initiative without my direct guidance. With the students’ passion, the fundraiser had a life of its own and caught like wildfire in our community. My students liked that they could direct their money to the School Fund and make a difference in other children’s education. We ended up selling every single pin – what a success – what a gift!

The gift to the people of Africa was a blessing for my class to be a part of, but the true gift was that of ownership that you gave to my students. They learned so much from planning and completing the Traveller Doll Fundraiser. My students will always remember their experience, your visit to our classroom and their gift to the Hillcrest Centre.

As a teacher I have to comment on the adaptability of the fundraiser to fit right across each subject’s curriculum. I was using technology in my classroom each time we emailed you as a class; we planned the financial details in Math class; we reflected on our goals in Language Arts class and we discussed the differences and similarities between the two countries in Social Studies. I found this fundraiser to fit perfectly with my use of the Global Trek program in my grade three classroom.

All the very best to you,

Leslie Bardal
